Portugal: Jorge Jesus names his first 25-player squad

TBO SPORT · 18.09.2026

Jorge Jesus announced his first Portugal squad on September 18. The 25-player selection includes four additions to the World Cup group: Samuel Soares, Nuno Tavares, João Palhinha and Fábio Silva. Cristiano Ronaldo is also included.

What changes in the squad

Samuel Soares receives his first senior call-up. His inclusion adds an option in goal, while the other additions involve different areas of the pitch. Selection brings an opportunity to take part in preparations; it does not yet establish who will play or which system the new coach will use.

Wales provide the first test

Portugal are scheduled to begin this competitive phase against Wales on September 24 in the Nations League. The build-up and eventual team sheet will offer the first clues about how responsibilities are distributed within the squad.

For supporters following each international window, the Portugal 2026 shirt is another expression of that connection to the team.

TBO SPORT analysis

The interest lies in how continuity and renewal fit together. To assess a new coaching era, watch the build-up, the response after losing possession and the links between midfield and attack. A new name does not automatically mean a tactical revolution. The first squad marks the start of a working process, rather than a settled pecking order. Training and match decisions will give those choices their meaning.
