Germany's top women's division has a date for its new structure: July 1, 2027. On September 18, the DFB unanimously approved the agreements allowing responsibility for organising and marketing the competition to pass to FBL e.V.
What changes and what stays
The 2026/27 season will be a transition period. The agreed framework runs until June 30, 2034, while the women's second division remains under the DFB. Independence therefore concerns the management of the top flight; it does not mean all German women's football changes hands.
Implementation comes next
The announcement establishes an organisational framework. Its practical effects will need to be assessed during the transition and after the new phase begins. It does not, by itself, guarantee higher revenue, audiences or salaries.
That connection also lives in club colours. The Bayern Munich 2026/27 shirt represents one of German football's identities.
TBO SPORT analysis: judging the change
For supporters, a management reform becomes tangible through practical matters: clear scheduling, access to matches and the stadium experience. Assessing the project will require separating stated objectives from measurable results. Coordination between clubs, player development and the national team also deserves attention. Autonomy creates room to make decisions; outcomes depend on the choices made and how they are carried out. Following those details will be more useful than treating a new structure as an automatic success.
